Understanding Battery Technologies: SMF vs EFB vs AGM
Fitting the correct battery chemistry is critical. Modern stop-start vehicles with smart alternators require EFB or AGM batteries to handle rapid charge-discharge cycles.
Sealed Maintenance Free (SMF)
Traditional calcium-alloy batteries engineered for standard vehicles without start-stop functionality. Provides high cranking amps and zero maintenance.
- • Designed for conventional ignition engines
- • Reliable starting for non-ISS vehicles
- • Not suitable for stop-start or micro-hybrid vehicles
EFB (Idle Stop-Start)
Enhanced flooded battery with polyfleece scrims and carbon additives. Delivers twice the cyclic endurance of standard batteries. Standard OEM on Mazda i-Stop and Japanese ISS vehicles.
- • High dynamic charge acceptance
- • Handles frequent engine re-starts
- • Standard spec for Q85, S95 & T110 fitments
AGM (High Electrical Demand)
Electrolyte absorbed into microglass mats under high compression. Offers 3x-4x cyclic life, exceptional vibration resistance, and leak-proof safety for boot-mounted installations.
- • Factory fitment on Audi, BMW, Mercedes & VW
- • Supports regenerative braking and high accessory loads
- • 100% sealed and spill-proof

Battery FAQs
Everything NZ drivers ask about vehicle battery fitment, replacement, and start-stop systems.
How do I know which battery fits my vehicle? +
Use our 4-step search above to select your vehicle make, model, and year/series. We cross-reference OEM dimensions (DIN vs JIS), terminal post types, polarity, and charging system chemistry (Standard SMF vs EFB vs AGM).
Can I replace an AGM or EFB battery with a standard battery? +
No. If your car is equipped with an Idle Stop-Start (ISS) system or smart alternator charging, replacing an AGM or EFB battery with a standard flooded battery will cause rapid degradation, alternator warning codes, and usually premature battery failure within 3 to 6 months.
What is the difference between EFB and AGM batteries? +
EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) is an upgraded flooded design popular in Japanese vehicles like Mazda i-Stop and Subaru. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) uses fiberglass separators that absorb all liquid acid, making it completely spill-proof with 3x-4x cyclic life — standard fitment in European luxury and performance vehicles.
What does CCA and RC mean? +
CCA stands for Cold Cranking Amps — the measure of how much electrical current the battery can deliver at -18°C for 30 seconds. RC stands for Reserve Capacity — the number of minutes the battery can supply electrical power if the vehicle's alternator fails.
Do you offer battery installation in Auckland? +
Yes! Hyper Drive provides complete battery installation services at our Penrose workshop (434 Church Street East, Penrose, Auckland 1061). Fitting includes memory saving and BMS battery registration.
