The most important step in choosing a Thule roof rack is identifying your vehicle's roof type. Each type requires a different foot pack. Check the guide below before searching.
🟢
Raised Rails
Raised Rail Mount
Factory roof rails that sit above the roof surface with a visible gap underneath. You can slide your hand under the rail. The most common type on NZ SUVs and utes.
Common vehicles: Toyota RAV4, Hilux, Prado, Ford Ranger Wildtrak, Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Forester, Nissan X-Trail, Isuzu D-Max
🔵
Flush Rails
Flush Rail Mount
Factory roof rails that sit flat against the roofline with no gap underneath. Sleek, integrated look. Requires a flush-rail foot pack that clamps onto the rail end.
Common vehicles: Subaru Outback, Kia Sportage/Sorento, Hyundai Tucson/Santa Fe, VW Tiguan, Volvo XC60/XC90, BMW X3/X5, Audi Q5/Q7
🟣
Fixed Point
Fixed Point / Fixpoint
Factory-installed mounting points hidden under small plastic covers on the roof. Bolt-in attachment for an exceptionally secure, low-profile installation.
Common vehicles: Mazda CX-5/CX-9, Toyota Corolla/Camry, Honda CR-V/Accord, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Suzuki Vitara, Subaru Impreza
🟠
Normal Roof
Normal / Bare Roof
No rails or mounting points — a plain, smooth roof surface. Requires a clamp-style foot pack that grips the door frame or uses adhesive pads.
Common vehicles: Toyota Yaris/Corolla Hatch, Honda Jazz/Civic, Mazda 3, VW Golf/Polo, Ford Focus, Hyundai i30, Kia Cerato
🟡
Gutter Mount
Gutter Mount
Older vehicles with a raised metal gutter running along the roof edge. Common on vans, older utes and classic vehicles. Uses a dedicated gutter foot pack.
Common vehicles: Toyota Hiace (older), Ford Transit (older), Mitsubishi Express, Nissan Urvan, Land Rover Defender (older), classic utes

Thule Fitment Questions Answered
Use the vehicle search tool at the top of this page. Select your make, model and year — the tool will instantly display the correct Thule package including the exact bar size, foot pack and fit kit number. You can then click through to shop directly on Hyper Drive.
The WingBar Evo is Thule's most versatile aero bar — it works with raised rails, flush rails, fixed points and normal roofs using different foot packs. It is the most popular system for SUVs and utes in New Zealand. The WingBar Edge Evo is a lower-profile system designed specifically for flush rail and fixed point vehicles. It sits closer to the roofline for a cleaner, more factory-integrated appearance and slightly lower wind noise. Both carry the same load ratings and use the same T-slot accessory system.
A Thule fit kit is a set of vehicle-specific rubber pads and adapters that match the exact contour of your vehicle's roof, door frame or rail. It ensures the foot pack sits flush and secure without damaging the vehicle's paintwork or bodywork. Every Thule installation requires the correct fit kit for your specific make, model and year — the fit kit number is shown in the search results above. Do not attempt to fit a Thule rack without the correct fit kit.
Multiple results typically appear because your vehicle is available with different roof configurations (e.g. some variants have raised rails, others have a normal roof), or because the vehicle changed specification mid-generation. Check your vehicle's actual roof — look for rails and whether you can slide your hand under them (raised rails), rails that sit flush (flush rails), small plastic covers hiding mounting points (fixed point), or a plain roof (normal roof). The roof type badge on each result will guide you to the correct option.
The Thule WingBar Evo foot pack is rated to 100kg dynamic load. However, the effective limit is always the lower of the rack rating and your vehicle's own roof load rating (found in the owner's manual). Most NZ SUVs have a dynamic roof load rating of 50–75kg, so that becomes your effective limit. Utes and vans typically have higher ratings of 75–100kg. Always check your vehicle manual before loading.
Yes — Thule roof racks are designed for straightforward DIY installation. Most systems require only the included Thule torque key and take 15–30 minutes. The key steps are: fit the correct foot pack to the bars, attach the vehicle-specific fit kit to the feet, position the bars on your vehicle, and tighten to the specified torque. The easiest test: try to slide your hand or a finger under the roof rail. If you can slide your hand under the rail and there is a clear gap between the rail and the roof surface, you have raised rails. If the rail sits flat against the roofline with no gap, you have flush rails. If there are no rails at all but you can see small plastic covers on the roof, you have fixed points. If there are no rails and no covers, you have a normal roof. The vehicle search tool above will confirm your roof type once you select your make, model and year.
